This Week on the Island 07/17/2005

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Weather: Sunny and bright. It seem to be cooler here (mid to high 80's) than in other parts of the country (90's and 100's).

'The Citizen' front page Saturday, 'Schooner building should be torn down'. The City of Key West code enforcement is recommending that Schooner Wharf Bar be demolished. More later.

Another really good Key West Book (well, 2 books in one) this week. 'Haunted Key West' by David L. Sloan and 'Strange Key West' by Matthew Sean Casey, both in the same book.

Dogs are no longer allowed in Schooner Wharf Bar! I guess the Bennett family will have to find another place for Sunday lunch.

Met some folks as the dogs and I were walking around town. They recognized Wyleigh and Sassi from the weather channel. Since they were coming to Key West after the hurricane, they watched the weather channel alot and saw us on TV on Sunday as we walked down Duval Street.

It has been a little slow the first of this week with Hurricane Dennis and the tourist not being allowed back on the island. Even the cruise ships were not allowed to dock. But the tourist and the ships are here now. Everyone is looking for the destruction caused by Hurricane Dennis. It missed us by about 100 miles. On this side of the island we have piles of branches to be picked up, but that is about it. The Atlantic side of the island took a pretty good beating. The Southernmost Point and the Southernmost Beach on Duval were both covered in about 3 feet of seaweed. The pier at Atlantic Shores will NOT be rebuilt and the deck at Louie's has already been rebuilt. The beach at the Sands Beach Club at the end of Simonton Street along with the street were covered in seaweed. The Casa, after alot of quick work, looks like nothing ever happened, but Smathers Beach, Higgs Beach, and Rest Beach have lost most of their sand. Zackery Taylor Beach is nothing but rock.
