This Week on the Island 06/13/2010

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘The Blue Hole’. It is near No Name Key and used to have a gator until it choked to death on some kids’ toy. It is still full of turtles and a nice stop on the Keys Highway.

Weather: Hot and humid.

This week I finished ‘The Two-Bear Mambo’ by Joe R. Lansdale.

Jo and I have been a bit under the weather this week. Seems she came down with something like the flu, but no congestion, last Saturday and I got it on Wednesday. The good news is that I lost about 7 pounds.

Monday, residents and visitors formed a line down Duval Street for the ‘Sea to Still Shining Sea’ demonstration for World Oceans Day. World Oceans Day has been recognized by the United Nations since 2008.

Mount Trash More is a large garbage heap on Stock Island. Volunteers have painted it with a giant Rainbow Flag for Gay Pride Celebration that began Wednesday. Lots of activities around town for the next 10 days.

A bunch of kayakers arrived at Key West Friday. They began their trip in Miami. This is the 11th annual fundraiser for Castaways Against Cancer’.

Saturday was the annual ‘Swim Around Key West’. It is a 12.5 mile swim. Proceeds benefit swim clubs on the island.

The eddy that has held the BP oil spill in place has now hooked up with the loop current. The loop current will now send the oil toward the Keys.
