This Week on the Island 01/10/2010
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Weather: Cold: A cold front came thru least week end and it is still here with the lows at night in the low 50’s and the highs in the low 60’s with lots of wind. This is unusual because our cold weather normally last only a few days.
No book this week.
The big news in Key West this week is the weather. It has been cold. Many of the houses don’t have heat and many of the people living on boats are very cold. It has been in the low 50’s a night but it got up to 70 degrees Friday and then another cold front came thru Friday night. Normally it gets cold for 2 or 3 days and then gets back into the 70’s, but this time it looks like it will be cold for a couple of weeks. Sunday morning it was in the 40’s in Key West.
Sassi and Boca are enjoying themselves. They like the cold, especially the wind blowing in off the ocean. They love to go to the waterfront and face into the wind. They have lots of energy and want to do a lot of walks. I feel like I am frozen.
Boy has it been cold! How cold was it? It was so cold that the iguanas are falling out of the trees. When iguanas get cold they go into a state of ‘shock’ or ‘hibernation’ or whatever, and fall out of the trees. http://www.ktvu.com/irresistible/22166107/detail.html
We also have had 93 turtles floating because they were ‘Cold Stunned.’ They have all been rescued.
The manatees are swimming into the Tampa Electric Company Apollo Beach area to get to the warm waters coming from the electric plant. Also a sad note 429 manatee died in 2009 due to contact with water-craft.
The reptiles (python, gators, etc) are coming out of the swamps to warm themselves on the road (blacktop).
