This Week on the Island 02/07/2010

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘The Brigantine Crowith Cramer’ was in the Key West Bight this week http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corwith_Cramer_(ship) Both a Square Rigger and a Brigantine have two masts, but the Brigantine has a triangle sail on its rear mast while a Square Rigger has square sails on both mast.

Weather: It got into the high 70’s this week with plenty of sun shine. After Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Wilma we did not get rain for about 6 months (dry season Dec – May). This year we have had rain almost every day of the dry season.

This week I completed ‘A Book of Brave Deeds’ (1938) by Charles Knapp. I started ‘Immortal Logic’ by Carl Peachey (lead guitar with Michael McCloud).

The Hummer is in for another paint job. The last one has not held up very well in the sun the rain and the salt and all the rust spots that were suppose to be fixed are back.

Key West is an interesting place to live. Some people know that we are closer to Cuba than Miami, but did you know:
Havana is only 90 miles away but Miami is 150 miles.
Cancun is only 397 miles away but Jacksonville is 400 miles
Jamaica is only 554 miles away but Charleston is 650 miles away
Port Au Prince is only 735 miles away but Washington is 1,000 miles away
The Panama Canal is 1,054 miles away but New York City is 1,200 miles away
(Thank You – Google Earth)

In the old sailing days, the route that goods were shipped was from New York to Charleston, to Key West, to New Orleans and back.
