This Week on the Island 08/15/2010

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Another Key West Sunset’. I love all of them. This one ended in the ‘green flash’. When the sun sets and goes below the horizon, for a split second the sun shines thru the surface water at the horizon and causes a moment of green. (My theory and not very scientific.) The other picture is our visitors at the Green Parrot.

Weather: We got lots of rain the first of the week, it kept the temperatures in the mid to low 80’s. The dogs loved it, they don’t mind getting wet. Hot by the weekend.

The book this week was ‘Silencer’ by James W. Hall.

No dogs in bars, we are in a 45 day ‘wait’ period. As I go around the island it appears that the only outdoor bar that cannot allow dogs is Schooner Wharf. Last week I saw dogs at Geiger Key Marina. It seems a little unfair to me.

The Schooner Western Union is back at its normal docking beside Schooner Wharf.

Captain Tony’s birthday celebration was August 10th in front of his old bar on Green Street. Howard Livingston and the Mile Marker 24 Band played.

We had some folks visiting for the last of the week. A friend brought his sister and her boy friend. They had never been to Key West before. She had just turned 21. They had a wonderful time. We spent some time doing that tour guide thing as we showed them around the island. I always enjoy people that enjoy the place I live.

Some folks from Lake Charles, Louisana sat beside us at Schooner on Saturday. Nice folks.

Saturday morning while walking the dogs, Boca stopped and would not go past a food container sitting on top of a newspaper box. I opened the container and put it on the ground for him. He ate all the green beans and carrots and Sassi ate the potato salad. Another ‘urban hunt’ successfully completed.
