This Week on the Island 10/22/2006

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Key West: (I am displaying pictures of places the Parrot Heads may want to visit when they come to Key West in November.) The picture this week is one of our local Parrot Heads with Jimmy Buffett.

The Weather: Just another beautiful week in paradise, 80's in the day and high 70's at night with almost NO humidity.

This week's book was 'True Crimes' by Terry Schmida. A group of stories of crimes in Key West and the Florida Keys.

I met some more Parrot Heads from the North East that were here in town for a little fun. They seemed to be enjoying themselves at Schooner Wharf.

We get up in the morning and load me in the back of the little car (Suzuki Samurai Convertible) and take me to the VA for physical training. There I am tortured until my leg bends a little more and they let me go for the day. It is slowly but surly getting more flexible.

This week was 'Goombay'. The celebration of our African heritage. Goombay is held on Petronia Street from Duval Street to Emma Street in Bahama Village. Lots of good eats and entertainment. I especially enjoy the 'Junkanoo Band'. They have drums, whistles, cow bells, etc (anything to make noise). They move very slowly (like a New Orleans Funeral) and do a lot of dancing in the streets.

Jimmy Buffett was in town this week.

The Key West (Southernmost) Parrot Head Club held its monthly social at Captain Run-a-grounds at the Garrison Bight on the corner of Palm Avenue and Truman on Wednesday night. We had a large turnout and worked on plans for out 'Welcome to the Island Party' that will be held at Conch Republic Seafood, Wednesday night, 1 November, at MOTM (Meeting of the Minds) the annual gathering of Parrot Heads in Key West.
