This Week on the Island 11/01/2015
‘This
Week on the Island’ is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends
about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those
parts that are lies.
Weather:
It was nice last week, then the humidity
came back. This week it was in the mid 80’s, lots of blue skies and white clouds.
This
week I read ‘Kidnapped in Key West’ by Susan Haskell.
Jo and I
started the week by riding in the Zombi Bike Parade on Sunday evening. It
began out at the airport and ended with a big party on Duval Street.
This
week was ‘Fantasy Fest’. We had about 70,000 of our closest friends over.
Almost all of them wanted to be on the first two blocks of Duval Street for the
Fantasy Fest Parade on Saturday night.
Most
every bar in town wanted to get in on the action with some kind of party.
Captain Tonys had the ‘Plaid Party’, Sloppy Joes had the ‘Toga Party’, Schooner
had ‘Wharfstock’, Smokin’ Tuna had the ‘Smoking Hot Tuna’ contest, Dante’s had
the ‘Halos and Horns’ contest, Margaritaville had the ‘Why don’t we get drunk
and Lei’d’ Party, The Rum Barrel had it ‘Pirate Party’, etc, etc, etc.
It was
held on Friday and used to be ‘The Locals Parade’ but is now called ‘The Masquerade
Parade’. It started out at the graveyard with one part coming down Fleming Street
another part wanders over to Truman and they both end on Duval.
Like all
‘Fest’ in Key West, there was a Street Fair on Duval on Friday, then the Street
was also blocked on Saturday for the ‘Promenade’ with folks walking up and down
Duval showing off their costumes or lack of costume. (If it is painted, it
ain’t naked’.) The whole thing ends on Saturday night with the ‘Fantasy Fest
Parade’. I think every woman that ever had a 'boob job' was in town to show them off.

Next week is
Meeting of the Minds (M.O.T.M.). A gathering of Parrot Heads (Jimmy Buffett fans)
here in Key West. The buzzards and the Parrot Heads both come to town about the 1st of November each year.
Key West
you have got to love it
