This Week on the Island 01/25/2009
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Cold Key West’. Thursday morning it was 48 degrees in Key West. That is cold to us.

The Weather: The third cold front of the winter arrived bringing the worst cold of the winter. The temperature dropped to 48 degrees Thursday morning and 47 degrees Friday morning, breaking two records for cold temperatures, but it was back in the 70’s by the week end.
The lowest recorded in Key West since 1870 is 41 degrees, the highest is 97 degrees. Many of our houses do not have heaters.
No book this week.
We have a new president and I look forward to his time in office.
The Hummer has been repaired. It wasn’t the gas after all. It was the gas pump. Switched to the #2 tank and it ran well. Each tank has its own gas pump.
The Yachts have left town. The weather turned cold and very windy and really messed things up for them. Some races were cancelled and so they spent time strolling Key West and spending money. Normally we get about 300 yachts, this year there were only about 150 yachts.
Saturday and Sunday there was a ‘Craft Show’ on Caroline and Whitehead Streets. Last Friday night ESPN broadcast Friday Night Fights from Mallory Square. A guy that was caught with 1,200 lobsters pleaded guilty and is going to jail. A scandal at Sunset Key (off Mallory Square) has sent one Palm Beach County Commissioner to jail and another one faces the same charges. The Blond Giraffe has opened in the old Duncan Donut shop on Green Street across from Sloppy Joe’s. Fifty years ago Cary Grant was in town filming ‘Operation Petticoat’. And last but not least, homeowners insurance is going up again.
