This Week on the Island 05/10/2009

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Swine Flu in Key West’. On Cinco de Mayo, one of the bartenders at Schooner Wharf Bar in Key West came down with a bad case of swine flu. Looking closely you can see he has already grown a pig nose and tail.

Weather: Summer is here. Hot and humid.

I finished the book ‘Intelligence’ by Jeff Hawkins this week.

Things Tourist Say: ‘What time is the second sunset?’

This week we celebrated Cinco de Mayo (the fifth of May) and a great Mexican holiday of the defeat of the invading French 52 years after Mexico won it’s independence from Spain. Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ThisWeekontheIsland/ click Files, and then click Cinco de Mayo. My wife, Jo, entered the taco eating contest at Schooner Wharf and got a t-shirt. (been there, done that, got a t-shirt). She got 2 tacos, 1 hot pepper, 1 Corona, 1 shot of Cuervo Gold.

Lots of cruise ships this week with many of them coming to Key West instead of a port in Mexico.

The Schooner Liberty is to leave Key West for good this summer and will go to its home port of Boston.

Very few of the streets in Key West have a center line. The city is painting a line down the center of Duval Street this week.

I spent some time on my bicycle and at the beaches (Smathers, Higgs, Rest, and Ft. Zack) this week.

By now everyone should know the Dolphin Stadium is now called Land Shark Stadium after Buffett’s Land Shark Beer.

Friday I had my yearly physical and am in wonderful shape for a 65 year old guy. Six foot, 183 pounds with a nice tan. Cholesterol 175, blood pressure 110/70, pulse 65, only wear glasses to read. I also have stitches in my head, face, neck, back, stomach, knee, shin, foot, and toes. I have wire in my skull and a titanium knee. I have cracked my skull twice, broken my upper and lower jaws, right leg, fingers and toes, and am missing my right knee cap. I heal nicely.
