This Week on the Island 09/04/2011
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

The first and second pictures this week (click to enlarge) are “Memorial to Ray’. The third picture is ‘Dogs Allowed’ at B.O.’s Fish Wagon. The fourth picture is ‘We Sell Cigarettes’ at a Cigar Store. (I hope they also sell cigars at the cigar store).
Weather: It may be September but it is still hot and Humid with lots of sunshine.
This week I read ‘Hostage in Havana’ by Noel Hynd.
Hope you have a wonderful Labor Day.
Last Sunday while the north east US was getting hammered by category 1 hurricane Irene, another front developed off Africa and was headed west. It became Katia and looks dangerous, but it is already predicted to take that right turn and head north long before it gets here. We also have tropical storm Lee dumping rain on the Gulf Coast. No wonder September is considered the height of hurricane season.
Some of you may remember or even purchased a hot dog from the guy on the corner of Caroline and Duval. Well, Ray died this week. Sassi and Boca always searched for ‘left over hot dogs’ on the steps of the jewelry store on that corner at 5:30 AM every morning.
This week end was ‘Key West Brew Fest’. It started Thursday with a kickoff party at The Bottlecap. Friday was a party at the Southernmost Hotel, and then it moved to Finnegan’s Wake then to Krawl off Duval. Saturday it started at Camille’s then South Beach, then The Porch, and then The Green Parrot. Sunday it started at Camille’s, then to Southernmost Beach Café. Monday it started again at Camille’s then to the Green Parrot.
Next week will be ‘Women in Paradise’.
