This Week onthe Island 05/02/2010

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Sunset at the Key West Bight’ Looking west from Schooner Wharf toward Conch Republic Seafood.

Weather: Another week of the same weather. Wonderful, in the low 70’s at night and low 80’s in the day, clear blue skies and calm seas. We finally turned the A/C on, the humidity is rising.

The book this week was ‘The Conch Killers’ by Chip Giles. Great book.

Last Thursday night at ‘The Great Conch Republic Parade’ I seem to have picked up ‘The Great Conch Republic Crud’. I visited the VA doctor and got some drugs to get rid of the stuff and am getting better each day.

This week we had ‘The Key West song Writers Festival’. There were lots of free concerts at many locations around town.

I didn’t do a lot this week because of fighting this crud that has had me down, so let’s take a walk with the dogs (Sassi and Boca). We leave the front door and take a left on Caroline and then a right on Elizabeth. We walk one block to the Key West Bight, Lazy Lane, Jimmy Buffett’s recording studio (Shrimp Boat Sounds), and Kermit’s Key Lime Pie Shop. We continue on the boardwalk pass all the people waiting to get on board The Fast Cat to the Dry Tortugas (it leaves at 8:00 AM), and on to Conch Republic Seafood. We follow the boardwalk around to Damn Good Food (which isn’t there anymore) on to Alonzo’s and A&B Lobster.

This dumps us out on Front Street so we head toward Duval. We pass the big hotels on the right and Pat Croce’s Pirate Museum and Two Friends Restaurant on the left. At the corner of Duval and Front we continue toward Mallory Square and the waterfront to see how many cruise ships are in today. Here we cross the bridge to the Westin (used to be the Hilton) and around to the old Custom House and Mel Fishers Museum.

We continue on up Green Street and pass Captain Tonys Saloon and Cowboys. We are now on the corner in front of Sloppy Joes. We walk a little further up Green Street and pass the old City Hall and Ernesto’s that never opened. We pass the closed Aloe Store and the closed Key West Fabric and head back to the Key West Bight.

The dogs are not tired yet so we head up Lazy Lane toward Schooner Wharf. The Breakfast Club is in full attendance (first happy hour starts at 7:00 AM till noon). We go on up the boardwalk pass The Fresh Market, Turtle Kraals, The Half Shell and on to Dante’s. We go back out to Caroline Street and pass Harpoon Harry’s, Pepe’s, and B.O.’s . One more block and we are back home and time for another cup of coffee. We have been about 2 miles.

Thanks for taking a walk with us.
