This Week on the Island 04/14/2013

‘This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

Weather: Another wonderful week, but I did turn the A/C on to get rid of the humidity in the house.

This week I finished ‘Ghost Moon’ by Heather Graham, and started ‘Deadly Night‘ by Heather Graham.

Monday morning at 9 AM, Boca and I were standing on the corner of Whitehead and Fleming by the sign that says ‘End of US 1’. A Jeep Wrangler was waiting at the light. It had the top down and the doors missing. A young lady was driving it and she was wearing a baseball cap, halter top, cut off jeans, sandals and smoking a skinny cigar. I thought ‘Man I love Key West’. Behind her was a guy in suit and tie driving a red jeep station wagon looking thing with SPORT written on the side. I thought ‘SPORT’, he only wishes he was as ‘SPORT’ as she was.

Jo and I both ride electric tricycles. Before the tricycles I used to put 5 gallons of gas in the Suzuki Samurai every month. I took it to the gas station for the first time since December; it needed 3.5 gallons after 4 months. The tricycles are a good thing.

The Schooner Hindu had its 67 foot mast replaced Tuesday. Picture thanks to Florida Keys and Key West Facebook Page.

The 10 day Conch Republic Celebration starts next weekend

This is the old Conch Republic Flag. Next week we start the 31st anniversary of the Conch Republic with a 10 day celebration of the Conch Republic which was formed when Key West Seceded from the Union in April 1982.

This is the new Conch Republic Flag and includes all the Keys. Many of us are faithful to the old flag.

The 7-mile bridge run was Saturday. This is the same picture I used last year.

We leave you this morning with a look at the Southernmost Beach Café on the Atlantic side of Duval Street here in Key West, FL
