This Week on the Island 06/14/2015
‘This
Week on the Island’ is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends
about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those
parts that are lies.
Weather:Hot and humid with a chance for rain and maybe a hurricane.
This
week I read ’A Deadly Silver Sea’ by Bob Morris.
Monday
was another trip to the VA in Miami. Dental cleaning and check-up. I have
another cleaning scheduled for 6 months but the Dentist said my teeth looked
good and I have no scheduled appoints for teeth.
The
ladies of 801 Bourbon came out to clean the crossing at Duval and Patronia.
This
week was ‘Pride Week’ it used to be ‘Gay Pride Week’.
Castaways Against Cancer
kayak team arrived Friday afternoon at Higgs Beach, capping a seven day, 160-mile journey
from Miami to Key West to benefit cancer research. Through individual and professional sponsors, the
team raised $115,000.
My wife
bought me a Fitbit for birthday. It keeps track of time, heart rate, steps
taken, calories burned and stairs climbed. It has a computer part with all
sorts of info. The part I like is where I input food and calories eaten. It has
been a month now and I have lost 12 pounds. My average daily intake of calories
is 1,089 my average daily burn of calories is 3,050 for the first month. So that is about 2,000 calories of weight loss per day.
Have you
ever thought about ‘sayings’ that we live by, like ‘Never wear white after
Labor Day’? Down here it would be ‘White very lite, keep you cool. Black and
brown make you frown.’ Or how about
March winds bring April showers.’ Down here it would be ‘Summer rain bring
hurricane’.
Speaking
of hurricane season. The city has started its annual de-nutting of all the
coconut trees around town. (A coconut flying at 150 mph can cause some damage.)
Here are the trees on North Roosevelt with no coconuts.
Key West
you have got to love it
