This Week on the Island 07/25/2010
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The pictures this week (click to enlarge) are ‘Hemingways’.
Weather: It has been windy and cooler than normal this week. We had tropical depression Bonnie come thru on Friday. It rained all over Miami, but it was a beautiful day here in Key West.
The book this week was ‘The Bottoms’ by Joe R. Lansdale.
No oil yet.
The dogs in bars passed the second reading by the city commissioners. I think next that Florida Government in Tallahassee has to approve it and then each bar that wants to allow dogs has to apply for a license.
Hemmingway Days in Key West. They do it in the heat of July because of Hemingway’s birthday. A bunch of overweight guys with red faces wearing too many clothes and looking for a heart attack. Although in the last 10 years (that is how long I have lived here) it seems everyone has survived. The main event is the ‘Hemingway Look-a-like Contest’ at Sloppy Joes. It was held on Thursday, Friday, and the finals were Saturday night. There was also a ‘Hemingway marlin fishing contest’, and lets not forget the ‘running of the bulls’ at Sloppy Joes on Saturday.
There are lots of other events but the big draw is the Hemingway look-a-like contest. For a schedule of events go to http://www.pbpulse.com/events/2010/07/15/hemingway-days/
Next week is the ‘lobster mini-season’.
