This Week on the Island 03/05/2006
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

Key West: a city of change. The picture this week is of Dennis Pharmacy at 1229 Simonton St. If you are a Parrot Head you know the place. The diner and pharmacy are looking for a new home. Dennis Felcher opened the business in 1962 and sold it to David Alea in 1974. The pharmacy will relocate to the Professional Building at 1111 12th Street and the restaurant is looking for a new home hopefully in old town. They were in the process of remolding when Wilma hit. The 47 year old Coppertone sign from the front of the building will NOT be moving with them. It was blow away by Wilma. The property will be leased to Marine Bank.
The Weather: I was talking to a guy that has lived here less than 1 year. He said 'I knew we would have beautiful days, but I didn't realize we would have so many of them'.
This weeks book was the third by Dorothy Francis, 'Nurse of the Keys'. I would NOT recommend this book unless you are a romantic teen age girl. I got involved and needed to finish the book. I am glad it is over. I also read 'A Fool's Death' by Patrick Cody. My kind of book. Murder and mystery in the Keys. I really enjoyed this one. I had a hard time finding a place to stop reading.

Fat Tuesday night was Mardi Gras in Key West. It was held on the 800 block of Duval Street at the 801 Bourbon Bar. There was a gay cruise ship in town so the streets were packed. A good time was had by all.
Saturday was 'The Open Air Art Fair' on Lazy Lane behind Schooner Wharf. It was billed as Culture, Color, and Cocktails. Pic's at http://ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/G-DBennett/photos?m=t
Saturday and Sunday was the Boat show on the docks, next to the old Navy Sub pen, in the Truman Annex. Pic's at http://ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/G-DBennett/photos?m=t
Sunday was BO's 11 anniversary with Barry Cuda and the Sharks playing all day.
A few weeks ago some Cubans made it to the 7 mile bridge. Our Federal Government decided that it was not part of America and so they sent the Cubans back to Cuba. Key West claimed the land in the name of 'The Conch Republic'. The Federal Government has decided they were wrong and are now trying to have the Cubans sent back from Cuba.
