This Week on the Island 01/13/2013
‘This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Weather: Another beautiful week. In the low 80’s in the day and mid 70’s at night. Lots of sun and white clouds.
The book this week was ‘Beverly Hills Dead’ by Stuart Woods.
The Brigantine Corwith Cramer is in town again. It comes to Key West every year and docks at Trumbo Point. A brigantine has a square sail on the main mast and a triangle sail on the rear mast.
USS Constitution is a square rigger. It has square sails on both mast and looks like all the pirate ships in the movies. It is NOT in Key West. Old Ironsides.
Schooner Jolly Rover. A schooner has triangle sails on both masts.
Schooner Appledore
Schooner America 2.0
Schooner Western Union The flagship of Florida. It was owned by Western Union and was used to lay telegraph cable all over the Caribbean.
All of these ‘sail boats’ in the Key West Bight are available for daylight or sunset sails. It is a trip back in time after they get out of the harbor and cut the engines and raise the sails. Try it, you will like it.
Key West, You have got to love it
