This Week on the Island 07/27/2008

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Dippin’ Dots’ a new ice cream business on Green Street about 1 block from Sloppy Joe’s.

The Weather: Wonderful. I really love the summer in the Key’s. It is hot and most tourists have gone home and that leaves the island to us locals. It is nice and slow.

The book this week was ‘The Scarlet Letter’ by Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Not much happening this week in Key West.

There was a protest in front of Margaritaville on Duval. Buffett has sued the owner of the news pamphlet ‘The Conch Republic Coconut Telegraph’ in Key Largo for the use of ‘Coconut Telegraph’. They say he did not invent the term nor does he have a patient on it. More later?

Last week Jo and I rode the city bus to ‘Stick & Stein’. The bus cost 75 cent when we moved here 8 years ago. It now cost $2.00. The driver charged us 50 cent each (discount for the elderly). After dinner, we walked the 2.5 miles back home.

The first of the week, because of hurricane Dolly off the coast of the Yucatan in Mexico, we have had a few unscheduled cruse ship stops in Key West. It has made Duval Street a little busier that it would have been this time of the summer.

This week I got a cell phone. I haven’t had one of these since I retired almost 10 years ago. My wife, Jo, found that we could add a cell phone to her plan for about $20 a month. That is less than I was paying for a land line and we moved the old land line number to the cell phone. She also found that to purchase a new cell phone it would cost us nothing after the rebate. Smart woman.
