This Week on the Island 09/27/2009

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Dolphin’. In this picture we have a dolphin, the sky, the water, a boat, and some weather. A part of Key West that most of our visitors miss because they are down on Duval Street in the bars. Picture thanks to http://coconutandcrew.blogspot.com/

Weather: Fall arrived this week and the weather is cooler. It actually dropped to below 80 degrees a few nights.

This week I completed ‘Charles Kuralt’s America’.

Things Tourist Say: It was spring break and had been raining for days. A young lady said, ‘It’s OK, it doesn’t rain inside the bars’

Last Sunday morning at 6:00 AM, there were lots of motorcycles still parked on Duval Street. By the time the dogs and I took our second walk at 8:00 AM, the city was hauling off the last of the bikes. There are going to be some pissed off bikers. I have written about our Ex-Superintendent of Schools (a conch) and how his wife stole (it is said) over $500,000 from the school system and how he was convicted for 3 felonies and got NO jail time. Well this week the President of the Florida Keys Community College turned in her resignation. She was hired and has done a great job of cleaning up the college, BUT she pissed off a bunch of conchs by firing some and demoting others. They got rid of her. (Conch means someone that was born on the island).

The Minimum Regatta takes place in May. Teams build a boat out of one sheet of plywood, a roll of duct tape, two 2x4’s, and some screws. If you have never been, watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCWiC0Xtz4M

----------My Point of View----------------------------------
The Mayan Calendar ends December 21, 2012. A lot of people are upset and expecting the worst. (1) My calendar here at home ends every year on December 31st and I just throw it out and get a new one. I don’t get upset, I just do it. (2) December 21st is the Winter Solstice, beginning of winter, and the shortest day of the year, maybe the Mayans knew this. That takes care of the calendar ending and it also explains why you would end it on December 21st. (3) So now why the year 2012? The earth is tilted on its axis, the North Pole points at the 12 different zodiac signs as the earth moves thru space. It takes 72 years for the earth to change its tilt one degree. There are 360 degrees in a circle; therefore it takes the earth’s North Pole about 26,000 years to complete the circle of the twelve zodiacs. The North Pole will be back to its starting position on December 21, 2012. The Mayans knew this. The calendar starts over. Don’t get upset.
