This Week on the Island 02/15/2009

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Jimmy Buffett’. He performed a 2 ½ hour concert Thursday night for employees and family of the Key West Margaritaville. Union Troops on the Schooner Appledore for Civil War days.

Weather: We had Sea fog Friday morning and it rolled back in on Friday night. A strange weather situation for Key West.

The book this week was ‘The Florida Keys’, true stories of the perilous straits, by John Viele.

The island is packed with tourist. I guess everyone ‘up-north’ is tired of the winter.

We here in Key West like to celebrate things that never happened. This weekend was ‘Civil War Days at Fort Zack’. There was a ‘battle’ between sea and land forces, a court trial of a blockade runner, and a living history encampment at Fort Zack. Key West was part of the Union during the war and Fort Zack played an important part in the blocking of supplies to the south.

Our local newspaper is named ‘The Key West Citizen’. I enjoy this small town newspaper especially the ‘Citizens Voice’. This is a column of quotes from people calling in. We call it the ‘bitch column’. Thursday one of these quotes was ‘The Key West chicken saw its shadow and there will be 6 more weeks of tourist’.

Kelly McGillis, from the movie Top Gun, is in town this week.

Some folks from Wisconsin are in town for the month. We spent some time enjoying ourselves over an adult beverage as we listened to Michael McCloud.
