This Week on the Island 05/15/2011

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 1st picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Harpoon Harrys’. It is sort of a 1950’s diner with lots of cool stuff hanging inside. I went there for brunch on my birthday. The second and third pictures are signs inside Harpoon Harrys'.

Weather: Another beautiful week. In the mid 70’s at night and the mid 80’s in the day, but the humidity is starting to rise.

The book this week was ‘Wicked Appetite’ by Janet Evanovich. According to this book there are 7 deadly sins: Pride, Envy, Gluttony, Lust, Anger, Greed and Sloth. This is the search for Gluttony.

Michael McCloud is back from vacation.

This week was my 67th birthday. I wrote a list of ‘Old Age Wisdom’ to pass along. Then I decided that was not what you folks wanted to read. You want to read about Key West. So I trashed it and started all over.

Here in Key West we have all sorts of transportation. I enjoy watching people going to work in the mornings. Some of them are walking, some are on skate boards, some are on bikes, some are on scooters, some have motorcycles, and some are driving cars. We also have people on bikes pulling one wheel baby carries and some times these things have dogs in them. Monday I saw a couple pushing a regular baby carriage. The carriage had a little one wheeled platform attached to the back axel of the carriage. Their young son was standing on the platform between the handles and being pushed along. What a wonderful idea. I hope whoever invented this makes lots of money.

Not a lot happening this week. Most kids are getting ready to finish school for the year and most adults are planning vacation. The cruise ships still dump thousands of people on Duval streets each day, but they are gone before sunset. I like the summer when there are few tourist. If I decide to go somewhere in the car, I can actually find a parking place somewhere close to the house. I can ride my bicycle without having to worry too much about traffic and I can walk in most restaurants without having to wait in line.

I have people that stop and call me by name. I may or may not know them or I can’t remember their name. SO, if you say hi and I don’t call you by name, please don’t be offended. I say this because a guy on a Harley just stopped and I know I have seen him before but I can’t remember where or what his name is. Also lots of people read this blog and come to Key West on vacation and see me and say hi. I really enjoy hearing from all of you so please continue to say ‘hi’.

We continue to meet with the developer of the vacant lot behind Schooner’s. I think this is going to be a beautiful development.
