This Week on the Island 05/19/2013
‘This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

Weather: Another beautiful week with another cold front that dropped the humidity and made it wonderful. Lots of sunshine, blue skies, white clouds, a little breeze and little humidity. ‘It doesn’t get any better than this.’ June is the start of waterspout season. Key West and the Florida Keys is the waterspout capital of the world. Google it.
This week I read ‘Fort Jefferson and the Dry Tortugas National Park’ by L Wayne Landrum. I also read ‘The Train that Died at Sea’ by Pat Parks.
I would like to say a big ‘THANK YOU’ to the mystery person that paid our tab at Schooner on Mothers Day. I really appreciate it and I think it may have been more than you expected. If so, let me know and I will pay you back. Who ever you are.
Saturday, May 11, there was a paddle board race around the island.
They have finally started on the hotel for the lot across the street. It is suppose to open in August 2014.
Tuesday they started tearing down the house behind Schooner and on Lazy Way Lane to make room for the new hotel. This house was part of the Harbor House project that went bankrupt when the housing market tanked.
The house is gone by Saturday.
The new West Marine building is supposed to open in August 2013. It is at the end of Caroline Street in front of Dante’s.
Someone on Elizabeth Street finally got around to throwing out their Christmas tree.
Me on Armed Forces Day Saturday. Flag vest and dog tags.
Key West, You have got to love it
