This Week on the Island 12/05/2010
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The pictures this week (click to enlarge) are the ‘There be Pirates here’. Their encampment was down at the Truman Waterfront. The 1st picture is a tent with wares for sale, the 2nd picture is Pirates, and the 3rd picture is a pirate ship. The Pirate was British and was named Pugh and his ship was the Black Pig.
Weather: Sunday, Monday & Tuesday it was in the low 80’s. Wednesday was cloudy and windy as a cold front came thru. It got down to 60 by Thursday morning. This Sunday another cold front is expected to drop the temperature even more. I thought this was Key West.
The book this week was ‘One For The Money’ by Janet Evanovich. She is the same author that I read last week. She is a prolific writer.
November 30th the end of hurricane season, there was a burning of the hurricane flags on the Wharf at the Truman Waterfront.
Last Sunday we celebrated Boca’s (our Siberian husky) 6th birthday. We had a party at Schooner with people cake (carrot and cream cheese icing) and dog cake (dog food molded into a cake with cheese writing). We also had treat bags for the other dogs.
Monday started the destruction of the 2nd floor concrete deck on my house. Monday was a loud saw to cut the concrete. Tuesday was a jackhammer to break up the concrete. Wednesday was cleanup and cut and put down rebar. Thursday was adding the form to hold the new concrete. Friday was supposed to be pouring the concrete. It was put off until Monday.
There be pirates here. This week was Pirate Fest. Most of the activities were down on the Truman Waterfront. There were encampments, raids on Fort Zack, sword fights, etc.
Saturday’s paper had an article about closing Lazy Way Lane to Traffic and making it a foot path only. We will see how that goes.
Last Monday night was the Christmas tree lighting around Key West. Saturday night was the Key West Christmas Parade. No shorts this year. Next Saturday night is the Lighted Boat Parade.
The dogs and I were on the corner of Front and Duval when a dozen or so motorcycles went by. The guys and girls were all dressed in jeans and black leather. They were followed by a young lady on a scooter in pink shorts and a string top. You have got to love Key West.
