This Week on the Island 03/08/2009

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Howard Livingston’ of the MM24 (Mile Marker 24) Band. He had just returned from a cruise and was having lunch at Porky's on Marathon Key. Jo and I had the North Carolina Bar-B-Que sandwich with the sweet potato fries.

Weather: Another cold front last Sunday and time to get out the long pants again. Monday night is was 54 degrees with a strong wind out of the north. Saturday it was back in the mid 70’s.

The book this week was ‘The Book of Useless Information’ by The Useless Information Society. Did you know that ‘a penny whistle has 6 holes’? I don’t even know what a penny whistle is.

We had some folks from Chicago in visiting this week. Mike and Elaine are a lot of fun.

Last week ended with the boat show at the old sub pens next to the Truman Annex. This week starts ‘Spring Break'. Our spring break is from the first week end in March until Easter. That means we have about 2 months of spring break this year. The kids are very noise; they drink too much and sleep everywhere and anywhere. Many are away from adult supervision for the first time, and it shows.

Tuesday was another trip on the VA bus to Miami. This time for Dermatology. They like to freeze things on your body. They didn’t find any problems, except they told me to stay out of the sun. I told them that wasn’t going to happen.

We all know the 7 mile bridge is the longest bridge in the Florida Keys. Did you know that the Harris Filler Gap Bridge at MM17 ½ is the shortest bridge in the Florida Keys.

I like this guy’s blog. http://conchscooter.blogspot.com/ . You may want to check out ‘Sculpture Key West 2009’ that he did last Friday. It is about the sculptures in the Fort Zack Park.

This weekend is ‘Open Air Art & Music’ at the intersection of Lazy Lane and Williams Street.

There is also the ‘47th Annual Conch Blowing Contest’ at the Oldest House at 322 Duval. Let’s not forget ‘Bike Week’. Duval is packed with motorcycles. They are loud but they tip well and the ‘wait staff’ at the bars/restaurants are glad to see them.
