This Week on the Island 02/04/2007
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

Happy Birthday Jo Bennett.
This week I read ' Ninety-Two in the Shade' by Thomas McGuane. (1) I had to keep a dictionary close by, (2) The book has no chapters (3) The story goes on and on and then ends.
The Weather: Another cold front moved thru Sunday night and stayed a few days. Windbreaker and long pants time again. It was in the 80's on Friday.
Tuesday we took a road trip to Key Largo (MM105) to take Jo to the dentist. On the way there we stopped for lunch at Hog Heaven (MM86) and on the way home we didn't stop for dinner because Jo was in a bit of pain.
Some folks that used to live here came by this week. One couple moved to Montana, another moved to northern Florida. They were all glad to be back in Key West.
Thursday, the CBS Morning Show had a 'bit' about the Key's. If you missed it go to http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/earlyshow/main500202.shtml click 'VIDEO' and then click the Key's video.
Last week I wrote about how Key West gives to local charities. This week let's discuss Key West homeless. Key West takes care of their homeless. We have the homeless shelter where they can sleep. We have places they can get clean clothing and a shower. We have places they can get a free meal. These places don’t allow drinking or smoking; therefore many of the homeless don't go there. Also many of our homeless get money monthly from the government. BUT, if the homeless get clean, fed and fresh clothing, the tourist won't give them money for alcohol and drugs. Therefore they stay dirty, smell bad, and lie on the sidewalks and beg. Some of these people make over $100 a day. So if you are homeless, Key West is better than freezing in the north.
