This Week on the Island 09/06/2009

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) ‘a square grouper’ (a square bail of marijuana). Some friends of mine caught this when they were in Key West a few weeks ago. When the drug runners have the authorities chasing them they throw the drugs overboard. The drugs then sink or wash up on shore. The people that find the drugs (1) get busted, (2) have a party, or (3) turn the drugs over to the authorities. My friends turned the drugs over to the authorities.

Weather: The weather remains beautiful with the 5th named storm (Erika) of the hurricane season headed our way. It has been a bit warm with the temp around 89 and 90 each day.

The book this week was ‘Don’t Stop the Carnival’ by Herman Wouk (1965). Jimmy Buffett purchased the rights in1997 for the title of one of his concerts. In the beginning of each concert he would say ‘This is the legend of Norman Paperman’.

Things Tourist Say: ‘I’ve looked all over Key West and haven’t found Paradise yet.’ I pointed to my heart and said, ‘If you can’t find it in here, don’t look out there’.

September is here and the streets of Key West are empty.

Not only did the work of cleaning/reorganizing the upstairs storage room continue this week, but the A/C went out downstairs. It has been a warm week. The Bennett’s (Jo, Doug, Sassi, and Boca) were all glad that we had a little window A/C unit in the bedroom. The A/C has now been repaired.

The Paradise Café on the corner of Eden and Grinnell is closed and has been repossessed by the bank

Raven Cooper has left the island. She has gone home to Hot Springs, Arkansas. She should return in a few months.

Wham, a 196 pound female loggerhead sea turtle was rescued near the Dry Tortugas. She had been attacked by a shark. She is doing fine at the Turtle Hospital in Marathon Key.

The ‘60’s were an interesting time for me. I graduated high school and went to college. Then I went into the service and later went back to college where I met my future wife. Now I am in my 60’s and it is an interesting time for me, again. I’m living in Key West with my bride of over 38 years and enjoying life. Funny how it has all worked out.
