This Week on the Island 07/28/2013
‘This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

Weather: They like to give us plenty of notice. Tuesday on the 5:00 pm weather report the depression was 3,500 miles away. Wednesday it had a name Dorian and was 3,200 miles away. Saturday and Dorian looks like it is headed for us.
This week I started the book ’To Beat the Devil’ by Michael Haskins. Lots of action like all of his Mick Murphy books. More next week.

We call these guys ‘bugs’. The Florida lobster do not has claws. This week was the mini lobster season. It is a few days before the start of lobster season when everyone has a chance to get lobster. Needless to say, as usually, people were arrested for catching lobster before the beginning of the season, for catching more than the limit, for catching too small lobster, and for breaking off the tails before landing the boat.
We have had a few ‘square grouper’ float into the Keys beaches. A square grouper is a bale of marijuana or a brick of cocaine wrapped in plastic. When the Coast Guard starts chasing drug guys they throw the stuff overboard.
Someone added a picnic table to my favorite bench on Truman Waterfront.
Someone is adding sand to Smathers Beach out near the airport.
The old Coca Cola Bottling plant on the corner of Front and Simonton is getting fixed up. I understand a Rum Brew pub is supposed to go in here.
South Roosevelt then and now. The road has been paved, a seawall was built and a beach was added.
