This Week on the Island 10/30/2011

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

The first picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Sassi’. The second picture is ‘Sassi’s Birthday Cake’ to share with the folks at Schooner. The third picture is ‘Sassi’s Dog Cake’ to share with the dogs at Schooner. For Fantasy Fest pictures you will need to use Google.

Weather: Perfect with the high in the mid 80’s and the lows in the mid 70’s. Lots of sunshine and a little breeze with low humidity. Then came the weather created by Rina. It rained and then humidity came back. Then the sun came back out and it was beautiful.

No book this week.

Lots of friends from everywhere on the island this week. It was good to see all of you.

Fantasy Fest: The BIG event of the year for Key West is Fantasy Fest every year at Halloween. It is a 10 day party and marks the end of summer and the return of the tourist. This town of 25,000 expects to see about 50,000 visitors in time for Saturday nights Fantasy Fest Parade. The problem is that most of them want to be on the first couple of blocks of Duval Street for the parade. It is a mad house. Sunday morning it is another madhouse as all 50,000 try to leave the island. This year we thought we would throw in a hurricane just to make it interesting but it lost its power and all we got was rain and humidity.

‘If it is painted, it ain’t naked’ is the saying for Fantasy Fest. There are lots of painted body’s everywhere. Some of them are lovely and some are not. Go to http://www.fantasyfest.net/ for lots of info and pictures.

The Schooner America 2 is in the Key West bight docked where the old Schooner America used to dock next to the Schooner Western Union by Schooner Wharf Bar.

Next week there will be about 3,000 Parrot Heads in Key West for The Meeting of the Minds. They may be a little less than the 50,000 this week, but they are a good crowd and do a lot for charity.
