This Week on the Island 01/01/2012

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

Weather: The last day of 2011 was bright and sunny with a temperature in the high 70’s. Today should be the same.

This week I read ‘Deal on Ice’ by Les Standiford.

Happy New Year. I am sitting on the front porch at 7:30 AM doing ‘This Week on the Island’ because, well last nigh was New Years. It is 72 degrees this morning and look like it is going to be a beautiful day.

The island has been packed all week. I guess people want to get out of the frozen north.

The Dachshund (wiener dog) parade was Friday.

We have lots of New Years celebrations at Restaurants/bars all over the island, but the three big celebrations here in Key West for New Years and they are free. One is the lowering of the conch shell at Sloppy Joes on the 200 block of Duval Street. Another is the lowering of Sushi, a female impersonator, in a big slipper on the 800 block of Duval Street, and the third is the lowering of the Pirate Wench from the mast of a schooner at Schooner Wharf. It was 73.6 degrees at midnight.

There is another new bar/restaurant in town. The Iron Horse Saloon is on Green Street across from the old city hall and Sloppy Joes. This building has seen lots of business come and go since it was ‘The Citizen’ (local newspaper) building. We all wish him the best. He also has ‘Tattoo’s and Scars’ and ‘Cowboys’ and ‘Shots and Giggles’.
