This Week on the Island 08/19/2007

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week is the tombstone of 'Elvira'. It is located in the floor of the pool table room in Captain Tony's Bar. Elvira was (supposingly) the last person hung on the old Key West Hanging Tree which is about 20 feet away (other side of the bar) and now grows thru the roof of Captain Tony's Bar. We have discussed Captain Tony's before: It is the oldest continual bar in Florida, It was the ice house and was the coolest bar in town and therefore was also the morgue. Hemingway hung out there when it was owned by Sloppy Joe. The landlord went up on the rent and Sloppy Joe and all his customers moved the bar to the current location of Sloppy Joe's on the corner of Duval and Green.

No book this week.

The Weather: Keeping an eye on Hurricane Dean.

We have been doing the tourist thing all week with our visitors. Sloppy Joe's, Captain Tony's, Hogs Breath, Mallory Square, Island Dog, Schooner, etc, etc.

The MARC House (Monroe County Association for Retarded Citizens) is moving to a new location on Seminary Street.

There was a rather large waterspout off shore on Thursday.

There was a TV series in the early 90's named 'Key West'. It aired 13 episodes but was so dumb that it was cancelled. The Green Parrot Bar is going to start showing an episode each Tuesday night at 8:00 PM. Since they used locals in the series, many locals plan to watch at the Green Parrot.
