This Week on the Island 04/17/2016
‘This
Week on the Island’ is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends
about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those
parts that are lies.
Weather:
Same as last week. Beautiful all week. Nice.
The book
this week was ‘Square Grouper’ by Lewis Haskell. He joins us for coffee at the
White Tarpon most mornings when he is in town.
Not a lot happening for me this week so I thought I would show some old pictures.
Before there was a road to Key West, Flagler built a railroad.
After the Great Hurricane of 1935 the railroad was destroyed and a road was built using the old rail bed. This is the old 'swing bridge' on the old 7 mile bridge.
This is the end of Duval before the big hotels moved in. (Sunset pier can be seen.)
Old Blue Heaven.
Old Fishermans Cafe where Harpoon Harry's is now.
Tank island before it became Sunset Key.
Truman Waterfront before the Navy gave it to the City Of Key West.
The Oldest Bar before it was Captain Tony's.
And to celebrate the new predictions for hurricanes in 2016, here is houseboat row after Hurricane Georges of 1998.
It appears that we now live on the only dirt road in Key West. Suppose to start paving next week.
