This Week on the Island 08/05/2007

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

The picture this week is a dog cart Jo found on the internet and a picture of Wyleigh Dog with her new cart. Wyleigh dog took a turn for the worst. She is getting old. Her left rear leg quit working so I built her a dog cart to help her get around. It has two wheels on the back and attaches to her sides. The cart takes the weight off her rear legs and lets her go for walks. I saw it on the internet for $250 and went to Home Depot and purchased $30 in plastic pipe, joints, glue, and two lawn mower wheels.

The book this week was 'Great Expectations' by Charles Dickens.

The Weather: HOT, but I love it.

This month we have 'Sex on the Reef' in the full moon. It will be interesting this year because we have 2 full moons this month. Actually we have one the end of July and one the end of August. The coral spawn every year in August when the moon is full. It shoots trillions of luminescent sperm and eggs into the water. It is quite a sight to see as the sperm and eggs float to the surface.

Harbor House has started building their construction fence around the property. Harbor House is the property behind Schooner Wharf where they are building condos. It should take them about 2 years. The bet is that Schooner Wharf will be gone in 3 years.

Michael McCloud has settled his lawsuit against Toby Keith for stealing his song 'Tourist Town Bar' and reselling it as 'I Love This Bar'. Michael made a few bucks.

A couple from Jackson Beach and their dog came over to say 'Hi' when we were at Schooner. Michael played 'Schooner Wharf Bar Dog' and I danced with Sassi and she danced with her dog.

Bicycles: We are a small flat island. A bicycle is great transportation. When you get where you are going, there will be a bike rack close by to park your bike. Florida State law is that a bicycle is a vehicle and will follow all vehicle rules. That means, in the street, drive on the right, off the sidewalks, stop for all lights, give signals, etc.

Scooters: Many of our tourist rent scooters to get around town. Many of them have never been on a scooter before, but since they have drivers license they think they can drive a scooter. Many of our tourist do stupid things on their scooters. Some end up with broken ankles because they do not keep their feet on the foot rest. Some end up in wreaks because they get excited and can't stop their scooters. Some end up in the hospital. Some a little worst. This week a young lady ran the stop sign at Green and Simonton and ran into a truck. She is currently a resident in our hospital.

Electric cars: This is a much safer way to get around town, but again many of our tourist don't know how to drive them and some even let their kids drive them. Again you should keep your feet inside the car. This week we had an electric car, with a family of 8 people, driven by a young teenager, who took a left turn. A passenger in the back seat fell out and hit her head on the pavement. She also is a current resident in our hospital.

Diving: We had our 20th person of the year die last week in a dive accident. They were catching lobster in 10 feet of water and drown.

Come to Key West, enjoy yourself. Have a good time. Be careful. Don't drink and drive. Key West is small enough to walk most any place you care to go. Also that walk home, after a night on the town, may be good for you.
