This Week on the Island 07/11/2010
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Art at the Customs House’. Yes, the ladies in the background, the artist and the kid over the artist shoulder are all part of the display.
Weather: The temperature is in the 80’s here while the north east is in the 100’s. Maybe you need to head south where it is cooler.
This week I started ‘Writer of the Purple Rage’ by Joe R. Lansdale. It is a collection of short stories.
No oil yet.
No dogs in bars yet, maybe July 20th.
I forgot to mention that the Fresh Market has closed. It was the grocery store on the Key West bight near Schooner Wharf. I will miss it.
Sunday was July 4th. We celebrate our ‘Declaration of Independence’ which was issued on July 4, 1776. George Washington took the oath of office on April 30, 1789. So who ran the country for those 13 years in between? John Hanson was the first President of this country. http://www.constitution.org/hist/first8pres.htm . There were 7 others to follow him before George Washington. George was the first president after the Constitution was signed on September 17, 1787.
Chip Giles (Conch Killers author) stopped me on the street Wednesday. We again had a good chat.
Thursday some folks from Wisconsin stopped after leaving Pepe’s. I was taking the dogs for their noon walk. They read ‘This Week on the Island’ and are members of the local Parrot Head Club.
I read an interesting article on http://keywestmusic.blogspot.com/ ‘The south is north of here.’ I never thought about it but it is true. As a matter of fact I think the south is north of Miami.
Saturday morning while the dogs and I were taking our early morning walk, we ran into some tourist ‘looking for that bar that has happy hour at 6:00 AM.’ I told them that it was Schooner Wharf and that it didn’t open until 7:00 AM. Tourist, you have got to love them.
And last but not least, don’t forget the Jimmy Buffett concert to help the business’s on the Gulf Coast.
