This Week on the Island 07/23/2006

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Key West: The picture this week is just another beautiful sunset in Key West.

The Weather: It has been raining and in the mid to high 80's all week. We must have been one of the cool spots in the U.S. according to the Weather Channel.

This weeks books were 'A Farewell to Arms' by Ernest Hemingway (1929) and 'The Fifth Column and four unpublished stories of the Spanish Civil War' by Ernest Hemingway (1938).

I am now offically 'OLD'. I received my first Social Security Check this week.

The building on Green Street across from Sloppy Joe's used to be the local newspaper office. Then it became Crabby Bill's. Now it is Big Daddy Conch's.

Dennis Pharmacy closed Saturday. They have moved to a new location on White Street.

--------Hemingway Days, Mel Fisher Days, Parrot Head Sunset Cruise--------------

Hemingway Days lasted most of the week with a look-a-like contest Thursday and Friday afternoons at Sloppy Joe's and the finals Saturday night. What would Hemingway Day's be without a Marlin Fishing contest all week at Conch Republic Seafood. Then of course there was the 'Running of the Bulls' on Green Street on Saturday. We had a Hemingway Street Fair on Duval Street on Saturday. Mel Fisher Days-- You remember Mel he was the guy that found the Spanish treasure ship the Atochia and brought up a few gold/silver coins and gold/silver bars. There was a parade on Thursday all the way from the Mel Fisher Museum and ending at Rick's. (a whole 1 1/2 blocks). Schooner Wharf Bar had it's Mel Fisher Day Celebration on Saturday with a homemade Bikini Contest.

The Key West Parrot Head Club went on a Sunset Cruise on the Sebago Catamaran for our monthly Social on Wednesday. A good time was had by one and all. If you are NOT a member, then you may want to JOIN this Yahoo Group to view the Photos at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ThisWeekontheIsland/
