This Week on the Island 07/16/2006

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Key West: The picture this week is a house on Simonton Street. It had beautiful gingerbread but look at it now. I hope some one will purchase it some day and restore it.

The Weather: Rain then sun and lots of humidity. Some of the old Conchs that swim in the ocean every day say that we will not be hit by a hurricane this year. The reason, the ocean water is cooler this year than normal. Not much just a degree or two. I hope they are right.

This weeks book was 'The Snows of Kilimanjaro and other Short Stories' by Ernest Hemingway. It is a collection of short stories (1927).

The building/alley that 'Cowboy's' was in has been demolished. The building next to Captain Tony's is complete but no one has moved in yet and the lot across from Captain Tony's has had nothing built on it yet. 'The Rum Barrel' and 'Island Dog' on Front street seem to be doing well.

'Mango's' (corner of Duval and Angela) has been purchased by the same people that own 'Fogarty's'(corner of Duval and Caroline), 'White Fish, Blue Fish' (used to be Billie's on Front Street), and Jack Flat's (on Duval).

NEXT WEEK: Hemingway Days. A bunch of overweight fat guys wearing sweaters in 90 degree heat. Looks like a heart attack looking for a place to happen. Then 'Lobster Fest' the next week.

--------------------------INTERESTING----------------------------
June 21st is suppose to be the longest day of the year and the beginning of summer in the northern hemisphere. Here in Key West on June 21st the sun rose at 6:39 a.m. and set at 8:18 p.m. (13 hrs 39 min). By June 27th the sun was rising at 6:40 a.m.(one minute later) and setting at 8:20 p.m. (2 minutes later making that day 1 minute longer). So, June 27th was one minute longer than June 21st. Today the sun rose at 6:47 a.m. and set at 8:19 p.m.(13 hrs 32 min). The sun is rising later and setting earlier so they day are now getting shorter. (I have too much time on my hands).
