This Week on the Island 07/20/2008

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is my 1992 Suzuki Samurai. I have put 18 gallons of gas in it this year. I get 27 MPG around town (not a 4 wheel drive). I almost never get to put it in 5th gear because the highest speed limit on the island is 35 MPH. Can you imagine what it would get on the road? I guess the Samurai was ‘green’ before it was popular.

The Weather: Summer in the Keys.

The books this week were ‘The Purloined Letters’, ‘The Tell-Tale Heart’ and ‘The Black Cat’ by Edgar Allen Poe.

This week was ‘Mel Fisher Days’. http://www.treasurenet.com/found/melfisher/ He is the guy that found the ‘Atocha’, the Spanish treasure ship. They continue to find more ‘stuff’, but so far they have recovered more that $400 million in treasure. Last year his parade had the Budweiser Horses and their wagon.

This week was also ‘Hemingway Days’. http://www.sloppyjoes.com/lookalikes.htm I don’t think I need to explain who he was. For Pictures go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ThisWeekontheIsland , click PHOTOS, and then click ‘Hemingway Days’.

Ever wonder about the Keys and their names http://keys.fiu.edu/gazetteer

Some pictures from around Key West. If I didn’t live here, this would make me home-sick http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gqiZ75ci0xQ&feature=related

Saturday night, Key West, Stick & Stine, 2 lobster tail and a steak for $9.99.
