This Week on the Island 09/23/2012

This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Weather: A little rain, a lot of sun. It is getting cooler with the temp in the high 70’s at night and the mid 80’s in the day.

The book this week was ‘Gone’ by Randy Wayne White.

This week was UNITAS 2012 (Unitas is united in Latin). These are multi-national maritime exercises that have been a yearly event for 53 years. This is the first time Key West has been host. There are 13 ships from the U.S., South America, and Central America in the exercises this year and 10 of these ships are at the Truman Waterfront.

Can you imagine, 15 people came from Cuba to the US on this boat? It landed at Higgs Beach this week.

Lightning hit the top of the old Bank Building on the corner of Duval and Front Street. It blew a bunch of tiles off the roof.

The walls are going back up at Schooner.

The Bar-B-Que Restaurant at Green Parrot is getting close to opening.

It looks like a WWII pill box (machine gun nest) but it is a cestrum that used to be in the ground and was used to capture rainwater.

The old Key West Power Plant back in Bahama Village.

Uncle Russell has left the island. He will be missed.
