This Week on the Island 06/12/2005

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Weather: Hot & Sunny last weekend, Monday - Friday it was Hot & lots of rain with tropical storm Arlene, Hot & Sunny this weekend.

This week (June 4- 12) was 'Pride Week', it used to be 'Gay Pride Week' but they changed the name to attract more people. It has been pretty much rained out by tropical storm Arlene.

'Nautical Contraband' , a book by C.G. McDaniel was very entertaining. I would like to thank Drifty (President PHIP) for recommending it to us Parrot Heads. It gave me something to read during the storm.

Two Parrot Heads from Central Florida dropped by to say hi, I later saw them again at Schooner listening to Michael McCloud.

Rep Ken Sorensen (R - Key West) tried to get a law passed as an exception to the Florida 'No Smoking Law'. Ken's law made it OK for a Restaurant/Bar in a Historic building to get up to 20% of their income from food and still allow smoking. The only Restaurant/Bar in Florida that meets this requirement would be Sloppy Joe's. Governor Bush Vetoed the bill.

The week of June 12th starts 'Cuban American Week'.

The week end of June 16-19 will be 'Chicken Fest'.

'African/American Heritage' is June 15 - 25.
