This Week on the Island 12/29/2013

‘This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

Weather: A beautiful week with the lows in the 70’s and the highs in the low 80’s and lots of sunshine. Same as last week, the week before, and the week before that.

This week I am still reading ‘Buzz Cut’ by James W. Hall.

We love Dogs. We have had many dogs as companions most of our lives. Our latest selection of dogs have been Siberian Husky’s from rescue. If a dog is NOT adopted from rescue, they are killed. Dogs are always glad to see you. They never ask you where you have been. They never ask you who you have been with. They are unconditional love. A dog is the only animal that will love you more than it loves itself. Put your best friend and you best dog in the trunk of your car. Let them out later and see who is most glad to see you. DOG is GOD spelled backwards and is a reflection of what GOD is supposed to be. The older I get, the more I understand people that leave their fortune to their animals.

Wyleigh was our first husky. My wife found her running loose in the apartment complex in Charlotte, NC. We could not find her owners, so she became ours. She lived to be a little over 14. We miss her dearly.

Nevada was our second husky. He was a rescue from Charlotte. He and Wyleigh both had a good life. Nevada had seizures and was on meds. When he knew a seizure was coming, he would come and lay at my feet until it as over. It was my job to protect him at this time. We moved to Key West with Wyleigh and Nevada. They both loved it here. He lived to be 14.

Sassi was our next husky and was from Husky Rescue in Ft. Lauderdale after Nevada left the island. (She looks a lot like Nevada). She was my dance partner at Schooner Wharf and the love of my life. She and Wyleigh played together. I have tears in my eyes as I remember her. She lived to be a little over 15.

Boca came to us thru Husky Rescue from Jacksonville, FL after Wyleigh left the island. (He looks a lot like Wyleigh).  He is a great guy and loves left over pizza found lying on Duval Street on our 5:00 AM walks.  He is a great companion for this old guy. Boca's pupils are not round they are star shaped.

Tyler came to us thru Husky Rescue from Sarasota, FL after Sassi left the island. (She looks a lot like Nevada and Sassi). Tyler is a little thing and is old and deaf. She and Boca are both about 9 years old. I didn’t want another dog after losing Sassi, but Boca needed a friend and we saw the write-up on Tyler and knew no one else would take her. (Who else would want an old deaf dog?) She and Boca love the walks about the island and they are both  old enough that they will probably both leave the island before me. Old people worry a lot about what will happen to their animals after they are gone.

Life would not be as enjoyable without the love and companionship of a good animal.
