This Week On The Island 11/09/2008

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The pictures this week (click to enlarge) are ‘Captain Tony’ on the cover of his new book and ‘Captain Tony’ on the cover of the Key West Citizen.

The Weather: Beautiful. The house is open and the breeze in blowing thru.

The book this week was ‘Life Lessons of a Legend’ by Captain Tony Tarracino and Brad Manard.
This week was Power Boat Racing. The Parrot Heads were not out of town yet and the Power Boats were parading down Duval Street. The Power Boat People are loud and spend lots of money and give great tips. The wait staff at the different Bars/restaurants are glad to see them come. They race in the waters off Mallory Square. It is kind of like NASCAR at sea. There are helicopters overhead to stop the races in case of a wreak or if a turtle swims into the area. Sidney the turtle was rescued Thursday and will be released. Go to http://conchscooter.blogspot.com/ , page down to BOAT RACES, he has great pictures.

The turkey vultures are back on their migration south. They come thru every November.

Scrubs on Caroline Street and the new Cuban Restaurant on Green Street have closed. Turtle Kraals has reopened after being closed for about a month.

The Captain has left the island. At his viewing he had a deck of cards in his right hand, a pack of Luckys in his left hand and a folded up picture of Marilyn Monroe in his top pocket. There was a funeral mass on Saturday and a parade from St. Mary Star of the Sea down Duval to Captain Tony’s on Green Street. A street party was held from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm.
