This Week on the Island 08/03/2014

‘This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

Weather: Hot and humid with a chance of rain and an occasional hurricane. High 80’s in the day, mid 80’s at night.
This week I finished reading ‘Worst Fears Realized’ by Stuart Woods.
This week we had mini-lobster season. It is two days set aside, before the lobster season opens, for gathering lobster. The rules are simple: Don’t start before time, lobster must be over a certain size (no babies), lobster must be kept whole until reaching land, don’t dive in the canals, and only 6 per person. If you are underwater, you need a dive flag. If you use a boat you must follow all the boating rules.
People started getting arrested 2 weeks ago. All collecting lobster before season, all had some small lobster, and all had too many lobster. One death on Wednesday.
Our lobster are not like Maine lobster. Ours are smaller (there are exceptions) and have no claws.

We had a fairwell for Sir Peter Anderson, Secretary General of the Conch Republic, on Saturday.

It started at Mallory Square and then there was a parade down Duval from one ocean to the other. A good send-off for a great guy.

CVS in moving into the building next to Margaritaville that use to have Fast Buck Freddie’s.

Chapman rides Duval at night on his tricycle. A fund raiser was held for him this week to help him save his house. It is being repossessed by the bank.

Sunday will be The Waiters Race on Lazy Way Lane behind Schooner Wharf Bar.

We are still having the beautiful sun sets and sun rises due to the Sahara dust in the air from North Africa.

Key West you have got to love it
