This Week on the Island 08/31/2008

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘521 Elizabeth Street’. This house looked to be in bad shape. The porch was falling down and the paint was peeling. All the other houses on this side of the street had been ‘rebuilt’. The new owners have rebuilt the porches and are stripping the house of all the old paint. The wood is Dade County Pine, which holds up very well in the Key West climate. It is looking better every day.

The Weather: Can you say Gustav? Another week another hurricane. Beautiful week, stormy weekend.

No book this week.

We have had folks visiting all week, so Jo and I have been playing tourist guide. We normally do not go to Duval Street at night and we try to stay away from most tourist attractions (except Schooner Wharf). When folks come to visit we get to see again why people come to Key West. This is an interesting little town.

Because of another hurricane, many people have cancelled their trip to Key West for the Labor Day weekend. The town is pretty quiet.

Thursday we ran into a guy that graduated from the same high school as I did. He and family and friends were visiting Schooner Wharf. We talked about the old hometown.

A friend sent a picture of our house on Google Earth http://www.panoramio.com/photo/2770443
