This Week on the Island 11/23/2008

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is the ‘Old Bahia Honda Bridge’ (Spanish for Deep Bay.) Pictures thanks to http://conchscooter.blogspot.com/

The Weather: COLD. It got down into the 50’s on Wednesday. If it is this cold here, how cold is it up there?

No book this week.

There are 42 bridges on US1 to Key West. The most famous is the 7 mile bridge, but the most unique is the old Bahia Honda Bridge. It was built by Flagler when he built the train rail to Key West. When the hurricane of Labor Day weekend of 1935 destroyed the railroad, the old railroad was turned into a road for autos. To make the bridges wide enough for auto traffic, they used the metal rails by turning them crossways of the roadway. Bahia Honda Bridge had a cage around it and could not be widened, so they built the road on top of the old bridge cage. The old bridge can be seen from the new 4 lane bridge that opened in 1982.

Some folks have asked about the picture of Rick last week. Yes, Rick’s paintings are for sale. Yes, he does ship. Yes, you can get in touch with him at 305-304-5915. Think Christmas present from Key West.
