This Week on the Island 02/08/2009

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Hibiscus’. The hibiscus at the front steps blooms all year long here in Key West.

Weather: Sunday was beautiful with lots of sun and the temperature in the high 70’s. Another Cold front came thru Monday with lots of rain and dropped the temperature into the 50’s. By Thursday night it was 48 degrees with a wind chill of 44 degrees. It was back to the 70’s by the weekend.

The book this week was ‘Up For Grabs’ (a trip through time and space in the sunshine state) by John Rothchild. I had to keep a dictionary handy to read this one.

Kenny Chesney was looking at the house at 425 Caroline Street, but has decided not to purchase.

The Odyssey Explorer, a treasure ship out of Tampa, has discovered the HMS Victory in the English Channel and it hoping to find it 4 tons of gold that it was carrying when it went down in October 1744.

The USS Vandenberg has been purchased by Key West and will be sunk to make an artificial reef. http://www.xray-mag.com/en/content/uss-vandenberg-artificial-reef-project-saved-city-and-state
