This Week on the Island 12/11/2011

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

The pictures this week, (click to enlarge) are ‘The Lighted Boat Parade 2006’. The Schooner Liberty Clipper, the Schooner Wolf, and the Schooner Island Belle.

Weather: When I got up Thursday morning it was 66 degrees and windy, by noon it was still 66 degrees. Saturday it was back to the high 70’s and lots of sunshine.

This Weeks book was ‘Raw Deal’ by Les Standiford.

Joe and Sharron from Wisconsin have been in town this week. I enjoy them when they are here. It was interesting to see Sharon all wrapped up and cold in that 66 degrees Thursday.

Saturday night was the ‘Lighted Boat Parade’. We took Sassi and Boca and sat near Jimmy Buffett’s recording studio. The boats all line up outside the bight, then come into the bight and pass the reviewing stand at Schooner Wharf. Next they leave the bight and go down to Mallory Square and make a circle. There were some great boats this year. I have no pictures because they never turn out very well. For pictures from 2006 http://conchconcierge.typepad.com/photos/key_west_lighted_boat_par/index.html

--------------------History-------------

I have been asked why Jo and I moved here. We were married in Columbia, SC on the July 4th weekend in 1971. We jumped in our 1964 red Corvette convertible and headed out of town on I-20. We made lots of stops along the way to New Orleans and then we headed toward the west coast of Florida. We followed the road to Key West and then back up the east coast of Florida and back to Columbia, SC. We had spent more than a few vacations in Key West since then. When I retired in May 1999, we started making plans to sell the house and move. We found this house in Key West and moved in on her birthday in February 2001. That’s our story and we are sticking to it.
