‘This week on the Island' is
written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key
West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

The book
this week was ‘Dark Harbor’ by Stuart Woods.
Last weekend, a Taste of Key West was held
down on the Truman Waterfront. Picture thanks to Rob O'Neal on Facebook
This week starts the 32nd Annual
Great Conch Republic Days Celebration (April 18 – 27). The Great Conch Republic
was formed with Key West’s secession from the Union on April 23, 1982. The US government
used the border patrol to block US 1 where it leaves the mainland. If that is
the border, then we will start our own country on this side of the border.
We started the celebration with the raising
of the colors at Fort Zack on Friday at noon. Note the cruise ship behind the flag pole.
Followed by a party at Schooner Wharf Bar.
Saturday was the Drag Races on Duval
Street. The Drag Queens arrived in their finest aboard the Conch Train and they
showed us all a good time.
I leave you this week with my friend Tyler dancing to 'Schooner Wharf Bar Dog'.
She has left the island. She will be missed. She
was only with us for a short time (Dec - April 17) but it was enough time to
build a spot in my heart. She went from being healthy to being gone in 48
hours.
Key West you have got to love it
