This Week on the Island 07/25/2004

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Had some friends in town the first part of the week. I suggested they go for a ride on the 'Conch Train'. We got heavy rain while they were on the train. Then when they got back the power failed and was out about 1 hour. I think, that if I were them, I would NOT' be ' impressed' with Key West.

Hemingway Days. A bunch of old fat guys looking for a heart attack in the Key West July heat. While I wear shorts and t-shirts, they wear boots, long pants, sweaters, hats, beards, etc. It must be fun because we have may 'look-a-likes' in town. There is a large Marlin Tournament, there are Art Shows, there are reading of Hemingway, there is the Hemingway 5K evening run, the Hemingway 5K morning run, the Hemingway 5K Sunset run, there are Hemingway cruises, there is the Hemingway Caribbean Street Fair, there is the Hemingway 'Running of the Bulls', there is the Hemingway Regatta, there is the Hemingway arm wrestling contest, and of course the Hemingway look-a-like contest that takes 3 days at Sloppy Joes.(Across Duval Street at Rick/Dirty Harry's, they are having the Young Hemingway Look-a-like contest).

Our Secretary for the Southernmost Parrot Head Club was in the Hemingway look-a-like contest. He didn't make it to the finals. Larry will try again next year. For photo's: click http://sphckeywest.com/ , then click PHOTOS, then click JULY SOCIAL AT SLOPPY JOE'S.
