This week on the Island 05/23/2004
'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Most of my time this week has been spent rebuilding the front porch. It is complete except for the painting. I am one tired person. I hired, Jack, a friend that used to live in Key West, to help me. Jack came down from the Tampa area and moved in upstairs until the job was done. It took 1 1/2 weeks.
The square rigger 'Eagle' in docked at Mallory Square this week. It is a Coast Guard training ship. Square riggers are what we consider old looking ships, they have square sails. Most newer ships are built with triangle sales.
I noticed the rental complex next to the VFW was in the process of 'fence renewal'. It seems some 20 year old, got in his car at 4:00 AM Saturday morning. Backed out of the parking place, hit the gas, went about 30 feet and side swiped a parked car, made a quick left turn, crossed the street, and went thru the fence. Then he tried to back out and run, but his car was stuck. He also couldn't get out of the car because the fence post was against the drivers door. Inside the fence was the bicycle rack and he destroyed a bunch of them. He was taken to jail.
Key West, you have got to love it.
