This Week on the Island 05/01/2022

‘This Week on the Island’ is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.

 The Weather

Looks like it could be a long summer if this from The Key West Citizen is true. I sure hope they start spraying before the end of August.

Also from The Key West Citizen, 90% of nesting sea turtles are in Florida.

They produce lots of babies. The baby's head for the moon shining on the ocean. Streetlights and car lights confuse them.

The first Cuban Sandwich ‘Throw Down.

The first-ever Cuban Sandwich Throwdown on April 16 was a delicious success at the Green Parrot Bar.

Five local restaurants — Sandy’s Cafe, Frita’s Cuban Burger Cafe, Kaya Island Eats, El Siboney and Yellowfin Bar & Kitchen at Ocean’s Edge Resort — entered their signature versions of the pressed sandwich on Cuban bread with pork, ham, cheese and pickles.

Sandy’s Cafe emerged as the winner of both the judges’ selection and the popular vote. Frita’s came in a close second.

It looks like people that ‘live on the hook’ are going to have to move their boats every 90 days. I have lived in ‘old town’ Key West for over 20 years and I have to move my car every 72 hours. Seems only fair that they should have to move their boats.

On our early morning walk, I have been watching the moon, Venus, and Jupiter.

Jupiter is catching up.

We cut the bananas, 50 in this bunch, off the tree and moved them out front so the tourists can watch as the bananas get ripe.

We leave you with ‘Easy like Sunday morning’.  Pic from Vance Pacey.
