This Week on the Island 09/28/2014
‘This week on the Island' is
written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key
West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.
Weather:
I live on an island. Since water temperature stays fairly constant, it is hard
for the temperature over the island to change much from day to night. Therefore
if it is 85 degrees in the day, then it will not drop much when the sun goes
down. Also when the cold fronts comes thru in the winter and the temperature
drops, the water remains warm and it doesn’t take it long before the
temperature is back to normal. I love
living here.
This
week I read ‘In the Key of West’ by Sir Peter Anderson. Sir Peter was the Secretary
General for the Conch Republic. He left the island this year and will be missed
by many.
Koda
has escaped from her harness 3 times since we got her. I looked for escape
proof harnesses on the internet and found the difference was an extra belt around
the dog’s middle. I found an old 6 foot lead with an adjustable grip and used
it to make an extra belt for Koda’s middle. It seems to be working as she has
not escaped since I made it. The clip hooks this belt to the ring on the harness that I hook the lead too.
The
plastic windows on the convertible top for out 2002 Chevy Tracker were pretty
much burned out by the sun. I found window plastic for boats for $19.99 for one
yard by 55 inches. I found plastic glue at the hardware store for $3.49. Jo and
I cut out the old windows and glued in some new windows. They look great. We
also replaced our old ‘skull and crossbones’ tire cover with a ‘Changes in
Latitude, Changes in Attitude’ tire cover.
Friday
night, Jo and I went to Smokin’ Tuna for the cigar club meeting. I had a light
Dominican and she had a Partigas Black. We each had a few adult beverages and
lots of good company. Life is good.
The Dry Tortugas
and Fort Jefferson (1846) are 70 miles west of Key West. The Spanish named the
place the Tortugas for all the sea turtles that nest there. Dry because there
is no fresh water. Fort Jefferson was built by the Union during the Civil War
to control the southern sea lanes. It was never completed.
MOTM (Meeting Of
The Minds), Jimmy Buffett fans will be coming to Key West the last of October
thru the first part of November. Here is a music schedule you may find
interesting. http://www.troprockin.com/trop-rock/trop-rock-music-schedule-motm-2014/
