This Week onthe Island 10/10/2010

'This week on the Island' is written by Doug Bennett and is an update to friends about happenings in Key West last week. Everything is true except for those parts that are lies.----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The picture this week (click to enlarge) is ‘Margaritaville on Duval’ and the ‘First Margaretville at Land End’. The Parrot Heads are coming to town the first of November so I will post some pictures for them.

Weather: Wonderful. Mid 70’s at night and mid 80’s in the day. Lots of sun and a pretty good breeze. It has gotten cool enough to begin wearing my Hawaiian shirts. For the next 6 months it should be beautiful. The A/C is off and the windows are open.

No book this week.

It’s a three day weekend with lots of folks in town enjoying the wonderful weather.

Dogs in bars. No news yet. Sassi’s 13th birthday is this month and we have no place for her party.

Last weeks picture was a sunset over the ‘toxic triangle’. The toxic triangle is a part of the Key West Bight with Trumbo Point and the Navy to the east. Trumbo Road and the old Key West Power company to the south. The Key West bight to the west and the Gulf to the north. It was toxic because of the Navy and the Power Company used the waters as a dump. It has all been cleaned up, but the name is still here.

The Health Department closed ‘Big’un’s’ on Duval Street. It has reopened so midnight pizza is available (for those that eat there when they come to visit).

With the weather cooling off and the humidity dropping (feels like November) I think hurricane season may be over for us this year. We have lots of new homeless moving into town. I can’t blame them; I wouldn’t want to live the winters on the streets up north. Hurricanes usually drive the homeless north, but we have not had one since Katrina and Wilma so we are getting overload with homeless. The economy isn’t helping. Come visit Key West and take a homeless home with you.

Today is 10/10/10. Somebody somewhere has something to say about that.
